Hootenanny for Haiti

Two inspiring events to tell you about over the past few days.

One of them last Saturday was a Hootenanny for Haiti , organized by Angela Mangiacasale, Kim Westad and Jody Paterson. It was held at Kim’s beautiful Oak Bay house. Jody,  Rachelle Reath and Aaron Watson performed on accordian, piano, fiddle, guitar, saw and vocals.  The place was packed.  Angela’s daughter Caitlin pitched in with great energy to collect donations and many others helped in the kitchen to dish up a lasagna dinner for the crowd.  Donations for raffle prizes included tickets for the Barenaked Ladies  concert, great books and running gear from Frontrunners.

By the time it was over they raised more than $4,500 for Habitat’s rebuilding efforts for Haiti’s earthquake victims. Habitat Victoria is matching that donation and expects the Canadian International Development Agency to also match the total, as they have with previous donations for international building projects.

What an awesome example of what a few individuals with a vision and the support of a caring community can do.

Thanks-giving

This week the Habitat Victoria crew dressed up and headed down to the Delta Ocean Pointe hotel for an important event: donor recognition night. The date landed neatly between UN World Habitat Day (Oct. 5) and our Thanksgiving holiday. How fitting! It was great to get a chance to meet some of the Habitat supporters who have “helped build it” in many different ways.  And it was moving to hear from one of our Habitat families about how that support has transformed their lives.  Thanks to all of you – because of you, families like Kevin and Amy and their four children have the opportunity for a simple, decent home of their own,  and all the possibilities that go along with it.

Happy World Habitat Day!

October 6th, 2009

Okay, it’s not as widely known (yet) as Earth Day or World AIDS Day, but yes, today, the first Monday in October, is UN-designated World Habitat Day. For Habitat for Humanity and everyone who’s concerned with housing for people in need, it’s a day to reaffirm that adequate shelter is a basic human right, and focus on the housing conditions around the world and here at home.
So what are people doing about fulfilling that right and meeting those needs right here in Victoria? Quite a lot, actually!
For instance, a group from Canada World Youth is working on the five Bethune Street homes that are getting ever so close to completion.
Today,  RBC launched a week-long poster campaign in recognition of World Habitat Day in 14 branches around the Capital Region, profiling Habitat’s work.
It’s just a sampling of the action going on today and this week to help make adequate shelter a reality for all. Many more people are quietly doing much more – picking up a paintbrush at the build site, buying or donating building supplies at ReStore, lacing up sneakers to run for Habitat in this weekend’s Royal Victoria Marathon
This Wednesday evening at the Delta Ocean Pointe, we’re honouring Habitat Victoria’s donors. Their contributions of time, skills and resources go a long way toward creating simple decent and affordable homes for hard-working families in our region.
